If we sacrifice ourselves for other people to make them happy so that they would be grateful for us being so kind and sacrificing ourselves and making us happy in return - we will be very disappointed.
This is not to say that we shouldn't care about other people, but to remind us that at the end of the day we are responsible for making sure that we are going in the direction that already makes us happy, rather than doing things for people and holding breath waiting for them to recognize that, which might never happen. Doing things for other people is all good and fine, as long we don't have a hidden agenda about that and as long as doing those things makes us happy - i.e. it is a rewarding experience already.
I have a tendency to forget to do things for the sake of love of doing those things and I also have a tendency to forget about myself, when trying to live a happy life.
